About the Potato Crop Portal

The Potato Crop Portal is maintained by the Centre for Genetic Resources, The Netherlands (CGN) at Wageningen University & Research (WUR). CGN is the Dutch national genebank, responsible for safeguarding, documenting and distributing plant genetic resources (PGR) for crop species.

CGN conserves a broad collection of potato germplasm — including traditional landraces, heritage cultivars, modern varieties, and wild Solanum-species — and makes this genetic diversity accessible for research, breeding, conservation and sustainable agriculture.

CGN maintains the Potato Crop Portal because there is a strong need for a central, comprehensive, and user-friendly access point to potato germplasm information. The portal brings together two important types of data:

  • PGR material — detailed overviews of available potato accessions in collections, including cultivated varieties and wild species, with pointers to where to request or obtain material.
  • Traits data — information and evaluation data for agronomic, morphological, quality, disease-resistance and other traits of potato germplasm.

By linking to relevant national and international databases, genebanks, and heritage-potato projects, the portal helps users — researchers, plant breeders, seed companies, conservationists — to find germplasm with traits of interest.

Please get in touch if you have feedback on the information presented on this website.

There is an additional PGR portal available for lettuce, that shows the relevant information regarding the plant genetic resources of lettuce.
